To assist with health system-wide waste management, from 1 July 2017 all Victorian public hospitals and health services are required to report waste - clinical, general and recycling - data to the department through the environmental data management system.

The Victorian public healthcare services waste reporting tool has been developed specifically to convert raw waste data into kilograms and into a format that can be uploaded into the environmental data management system. The most current version of the waste tool is the version available on this webpage.

Waste contractors have an important role to play in hospital waste management through provision of accurate and consistent data, waste audits and identification of opportunities to reduce waste to landfill. Example clauses are available below for health services which contract directly with waste contractors, rather than through Health Purchasing Victoria.
