Cancer research

The Department of Health invests in initiatives that rapidly translate research into better outcomes for people with cancer.

What we do

The Department of Health provides support for translational cancer research in Victoria.

The Research, Evidence and Information team (including the portfolio of the former Victorian Cancer Agency), invest in, and manage contracts for cancer research infrastructure, workforce initiatives, and collaborative projects. Support is focussed on rapidly translating research into new evidence and approaches for cancer prevention, screening, early detection, treatment, supportive care and survivorship.

The Department of Health, through the former Victorian Cancer Agency, has supported cancer research fellowships in Victoria since its inception in 2006. Historically, an annual competitive funding round supported grants and cancer research fellowships. The department now supports cancer research fellowships through Cancer Research Fellowships Victoria, an exciting new collaboration with Cancer Council Victoria.

The department will continue supporting current commitments to cancer research priorities made through the Victorian Cancer Agency and will continue to invest in cancer research including priorities that align with the Victorian Cancer Plan 2024-2028.

Funding opportunities

Cancer research fellowship opportunities are offered through Cancer Research Fellowships VictoriaExternal Link . Visit the program’s webpage to learn about the expression of interest and application process.

The Research, Evidence and Information team will continue supporting all past and existing fellowships funded under the former Victorian Cancer Agency.

For support with their funding, past and existing fellows should contact cancer.research@health.vic.gov.au through their administering organisation or research office.
