Key messages

  • National Immunisation Program (NIP): Free vaccines are available for eligible infants, children, adolescents, adults and certain high-risk groups.
  • Victorian Government-funded vaccines: Victoria provides some extra vaccines that are not included in the NIP.
  • Catch-up vaccines: Certain groups may receive these following a clinical assessment by an immunisation provider.

Eligibility criteria for free vaccines

National Immunisation Program (NIP)

To access free NIP vaccines a person must hold or be eligible for a Medicare cardExternal Link .

The NIP program is a series of immunisations given at specific times throughout the lifespan:

  • infants and children
  • adolescents
  • pregnant women
  • adults and seniors
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • people with certain medical conditions that puts them at greater risk of certain disease.

Catch-up immunisations are available for:

  • people under 20 years of age
  • people under 26 years who have missed HPV vaccination
  • refugees and humanitarian entrants of any age.

Victorian Government funded vaccines and immunisation products

Free vaccines and immunisation products are funded by the Victorian Government for the following people where clinically indicated, including those not eligible for MedicareExternal Link .

Vulnerable citizens

  • A person who has experienced socioeconomic disadvantage that compromised their equitable access to routine immunisations during their period of eligibilityExternal Link
  • Imunisation is based on individual assessment by an immunisation provider.

Measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine

  • Infants aged 6–11 months:
    May receive one dose of MMR vaccine before overseas travel. These infants still require the routine doses at 12 months (MMR) and 18 months (MMRV).
  • People born during or after 1966:
    Should receive one or two doses of MMR vaccine if they do not have documented evidence of two valid doses or serological proof of immunity.

Hepatitis B vaccine

People at risk of hepatitis B infection as follows:

  • all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - hepatitis B non-immune, no restrictions
  • household contacts and sexual partners of people living with hepatitis B
  • people who inject drugs or are on opioid substitution therapy
  • people living with hepatitis C
  • men who have sex with men
  • people living with HIV
  • people no longer in a custodial setting who commenced but did not complete a free vaccine course while in custody
  • people born in priority hepatitis B endemic countries and arrived in Australia in the last 10 years (priority countries include China, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Thailand, South Korea, Myanmar (Burma) Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Cambodia).

Rabies vaccine

  • Australian volunteer wildlife handlers working in a volunteer service in Victoria for the initial course of pre-exposure rabies vaccine
  • Post exposure treatment for rabies or Australian Bat Lyssavirus.

Japanese encephalitis vaccine

RSV monoclonal antibody

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) Beyfortus™ (nirsevimab) monoclonal antibody for infants and young children.
