The Energy break-up by end-use factsheet assists with the understanding of how energy is used in hospitals. It provides useful information for identifying energy efficiency opportunities, benchmarking and setting energy targets for retrofit and capital works projects.

Case study and factsheet

Consumption data from sub-meters installed in a large metropolitan Melbourne hospital was analysed. Data over a 12-month period from more than100 electricity sub-meters was classified according to hospital end-use groups.

Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) is the largest contributor to energy consumption and carbon emissions at 65 per cent and 47 per cent respectively. The next highest is combined lighting and power, which represents about one-quarter of the hospital’s energy usage and almost 40 per cent of the hospital’s carbon emissions.

A case study about the energy use and carbon emissions in a major metropolitan hospital is documented in the Energy break-up by end-use factsheet.
