The Department of Health & Human Services works to improve the health and wellbeing of older Victorians. The main focuses of its policies and programs are:
- creating age-friendly communities through long term and sustainable age-friendly practices and outcomes
- promoting healthy ageing, which includes optimising opportunities for health, participation and security as people age
- supporting older Victorians as they transition from paid work into voluntary roles or part-time work, or retire.
The environment in which we live influences our health, resilience and wellbeing across the course of our life. Creating age-friendly communities can help older people to do the things that are important to them.
Healthy ageing is influenced by individual lifestyle factors and social factors. Social factors can create health inequalities.
Hoarding and squalor
Cases involving hoarding behaviour and squalor are complex. The department developed resources to help service providers involved in such cases.
Preventing elder abuse
Health and community services that support older Victorians need to know how to prevent and respond to elder abuse.
