The mental health funding model in Victoria will not transition to the National Weighted Activity Unit in 2021-22.

Since 1 July 2013, the Independent Health and Aged Care Pricing Authority has priced admitted mental health services using the Australian Refined Diagnosis Related Groups (AR-DRGs) classification system, while non-admitted mental healthcare has been block funded until a new mental healthcare classification is available.

A new classification system for mental health services based on the Australian Mental Health Care ClassificationExternal Link (AMHCC) is being shadow-funded by the pricing authority prior to implementation in the national funding model.

The department is reviewing the revised AMHCC-based funding model for inpatient and ambulatory mental health care and whether further refinements are required prior to implementation in Victoria.

Data collection for mental health in Victoria is via the Client Management Interface - Operational Data Store (CMI/ODS), the Victorian Admitted Episodes Dataset (VAED) and Victorian Cost Data Collection (VCDC).
