Key message

Tall Man lettering is the practice of writing part of the medicine’s name in upper case letters to help distinguish sound-alike, look-alike medicines from each other, to avoid selection errors.
Tall Man lettering has only been tested for use by health professionals and is recommended for use in:

  • electronic medication management systems including prescribing and dispensing systems
  • printed labels for dispensing shelving in pharmacies and in ward medicine cupboards
  • drug libraries for smart pumps
Further information, together with a national Tall Man lettering list is available on the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care website
