Health and medical research aim to improve health and wellbeing by generating evidence-based to inform health policy, interventions and delivery of services. Research takes place in a complex ecosystem involving health services, universities, medical research institutes, government and industry.
We aim to improve the health and wellbeing of Victorians by supporting research aligned to translational research priorities, proactively initiating research when necessary, and curating enduring partnerships with the research sector.
The department supports health services and academic partners to undertake research through investment, access to data, system support and linkages to policy and program areas, focusing on reducing health inequities. Translation of research into policy and practice means that Victorians benefit from high-quality health interventions and care.
The Department of Health and Department of Families, Fairness and Housing Human Research Ethics Committee, accepts submissions for ethical review where the research originates from within the department (conducted by departmental staff) or is commissioned by the department and conducted by others.
