The Psychiatry Workforce Development Grants (PWDG) were developed to support Victorian psychiatrists in two ways, through facilitating participation in leadership development projects (leadership stream) and the use of digital technologies to support psychiatry training and workforce development (digital stream).
The leadership development stream aims to:
- Support retention of psychiatrists through reward and recognition of their work within public mental health.
- Improve psychiatry leadership capability within the mental health system.
- Assist psychiatrists to increase their capacity to train and mentor less experienced colleagues.
Recognising the potential benefit that digital technology can bring in overcoming barriers to service delivery and workforce development such as travel and geographic isolation, the digital stream aims to support Area Mental Health Services in utilising this to support training and development, for example:
- reducing lost productivity in travel time;
- reducing financial cost to both individual and organisation; and
- increasing an organisations’ and individuals’ pool of available resources to those within their geographical area which places increased pressure on existing services.

Emphasis will be placed on principles common across age-specific units as well as developing age-specific care pathways.|
