Department of Health

A review of the operation of the first 4 years of the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017 is required to take place between June 2023 and June 2024.

The Centre for Evaluation and Research Evidence is conducting the review, which started in July 2023.

The review is :

  • looking at how the legislation has been implemented and its capacity to enable access for Victorians seeking this end of life choice.
  • evaluating the systems, processes and programs related to voluntary assisted dying.

As the legislated five-year review is operational, it is not considering changes to the legislation itself.

The Centre for Evaluation and Research Evidence conducted targeted stakeholder consultations between December 2023 - February 2024.

The Minister for Health will table a report with key findings in both Houses of Parliament after the review concludes in 2024.

If you have a question about the five-year review, email CERE.VAD@health.vic.gov.au
