Victorians can soon access free naloxone from 20 dispensing machines across the state.
Naloxone is a life-saving medication that temporarily reverses an opioid overdose.
Naloxone dispensing machines are being installed across Victoria as part of a statewide trial. Seventeen machines are already operating across Melbourne and regional Victoria.
The final three locations are:
- St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne
- Flinders Street Station
- Victorian Aboriginal Health Service.
The machines will be installed in the coming weeks to improve 24/7 access to free naloxone in busy and accessible locations.
Each machine provides free take-home naloxone packs. Each pack has two nasal spray doses and simple instructions on how to use them.
Anyone can administer and use naloxone. It is non-addictive, non-intoxicating and cannot be misused. It works for overdoses involving prescription opioids, heroin and synthetic opioids.
