Victorians are being reminded to protect themselves from mosquito bites as warmer weather marks the start of mosquito season.

Warm and wet conditions can create ideal breeding conditions for mosquitoes, increasing their numbers and the risk of mosquito-borne disease.

Mosquitoes can spread diseases including Japanese encephalitis, Murray Valley encephalitis, Ross River virus, Barmah Forest virus, West Nile (Kunjin) virus and Buruli ulcer.

The Department of Health's mosquito surveillance program monitors numbers and viruses across

Victoria, helping to identify emerging risks and inform public health advice.

Chief Health Officer Dr Caroline McElnay is urging Victorians to stay vigilant, with mosquito-borne diseases capable of causing serious and long-term health complications.

"Mosquitoes aren't just a nuisance. They can carry viruses that cause serious illness, so it's important Victorians don't underestimate the risk."

Victorians can take precautions to avoid getting bitten by:

  • Covering up with long, loose fitting, light coloured
  • Using mosquito repellent containing picaridin or DEET on exposed
  • Limiting time outdoors when mosquitoes are active, particularly around dusk and
  • Making sure holiday accommodation has mosquito netting or
  • Using fly spray and mosquito coils when sitting or eating
  • Removing stagnant water from around the home and keeping lawns and gardens

"Whether you're heading away, spending time outdoors or enjoying your own backyard, a few simple precautions can make a real difference." said Dr McElnay.

"Wearing long, loose-fitting clothes, using repellents and avoiding the outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active can greatly reduce the risk of mosquito-borne disease."

People should stay up to date with health advice in their local area and take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.

Safe and effective Japanese encephalitis vaccines are available free for eligible Victorians.
