Gazettal notices for Schedule 8 treatment permits & drug event notifications

The notices published in the Victorian Government Gazette on 26 March 2020 provide important information for registered medical practitioners and nurse practitioners.

The notice published under Section 32A(3) describes when a registered medical practitioner or and nurse practitioner must notify the Secretary about certain reportable drug events.
This includes circumstances when a medical practitioner or nurse practitioner must make a notification about a patient (a prisoner) who is to be released from custody.

The notice published under Section 35A(1) describes five circumstances and conditions when medical practitioners or nurse practitioners may treat a patient with a Schedule 8 medicine without a treatment permit for a continuous period of over 8 weeks when the patient is not a drug-dependent person.

New Gazette Notice – 16 Feb 2022

This notice published under Section 35A(1) in the Victorian Government Gazette on 16 February 2022 provides new circumstance 6 that relates to Schedule 8 cannabis and Schedule 8 tetrahydrocannabinol.

It is in addition to circumstances 1-5 in the above existing Secretary Approval published in a Special Government Gazette No S158 on 26 March 2020.

The new circumstance 6 removes the requirement for a medical practitioner or nurse practitioner to hold a Schedule 8 permit when prescribing, supplying or administering a non-drug dependent patient with Schedule 8 cannabis or Schedule 8 tetrahydrocannabinol for more than eight continuous weeks.
