When a positive case of COVID-19 is identified in a residential aged care facility (RACF), immediate action is required by the facility to reduce further transmission and keep residents, staff and visitors safe. It is mandatory for Victorian RACFs to follow the steps outlined in the Victorian Residential Aged Care Facility COVID-19 Outbreak Management Toolkit.

For immediate action

Guidance about what to do as soon as a positive COVID-19 case is identified.

Under the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008, the Victorian Department of Health may direct a RACF to take additional action to manage public health risk including during an outbreak of COVID-19.

Staff furlough guidance

The staff furlough guidance if your facility has a positive case of COVID-19 (RACF Outbreak Management Toolkit) (Word) provides information on furlough requirements for staff in an RACF once a positive case of COVID-19 is identified.

Admission and transfer of residents during an outbreak

The Australian Government Department of Health supports residents in aged care facilities to take temporary leave from an aged care home during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Caring for residents with COVID-19

Residential aged care facilities have an obligation to continue to deliver safe, quality care and service to all residents in accordance with their legislative and Aged Care Quality and Standards obligations.
