The growth of joint replacement surgery in Australian public hospitals is well documented indicating continued increases in demand for hip and knee joint replacement surgery. In 2004 the Victorian Department of Human Services recognised the need to improve prioritisation processes and funded the Centre for Rheumatic Diseases to develop a system to prioritise and manage the care of patients waiting for hip or knee joint replacement surgery.
