Victorians now have easier access to free naloxone.
Naloxone is a life-saving medication that temporarily reverses an opioid overdose.
Twenty naloxone dispensing machines are being installed across Victoria as part of a statewide trial. It includes 10 machines in metropolitan Melbourne and 10 in regional and rural communities.
People can access naloxone dispensing machines at 17 locations across Victoria. The most recent sites are:
- Corio Community Health Centre
- University Hospital Geelong
- Peninsula University Hospital in Frankston
- Wonthaggi Hospital
- Cohealth Footscray (Paisley Street)
- Dandenong Hospital
- Royal Melbourne Hospital
Three further locations in the City of Yarra and City of Melbourne will be announced soon.
Each machine provides free take-home naloxone packs containing two nasal spray doses. Anyone can use the sprays by following the instructions in the pack.
Hospital emergency departments and Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCOs) can now join Victoria’s Take-Home Naloxone Program. This means more sites across Victoria can provide naloxone when and where people need it.
Anyone can administer and use naloxone. It is non-addictive, non-intoxicating and cannot be misused. It works for overdoses involving prescription opioids, heroin and synthetic opioids.
