Specialist Care Reform Blueprint launch event

00:00:00:00 - 00:00:01:23

Today we're talking about system reform.

00:00:01:23 - 00:00:04:12

And that to me is thrilling.

00:00:06:04 - 00:00:09:03

More than 5 million appointments happen in Victoria

00:00:09:03 - 00:00:11:14

in the setting of outpatients or specialist care.

00:00:11:14 - 00:00:14:01

It's the largest part of our public health system,

00:00:14:01 - 00:00:15:16

although maybe something that we haven't

00:00:15:16 - 00:00:17:16

had as much focus on in the past.

00:00:17:16 - 00:00:20:22

It's an amazing opportunity for us to reform and improve

00:00:20:22 - 00:00:23:22

how we deliver care in Victoria.

00:00:28:13 - 00:00:30:14

I've always described specialist clinics

00:00:30:14 - 00:00:34:06

or outpatients as the great unreformed part of our system.

00:00:34:06 - 00:00:35:18

But to bring this together

00:00:35:18 - 00:00:38:18

at a system level, I think is a great opportunity.

00:00:39:00 - 00:00:42:15

The blueprint sets the direction to redesign specialist care

00:00:42:15 - 00:00:45:23

so we can improve access, make better use of capacity,

00:00:45:23 - 00:00:48:23

and ensure the system remains sustainable into the future.

00:00:49:07 - 00:00:52:20

Only 20% of the specialist care appointments

00:00:52:20 - 00:00:57:02

in 2024 - 25 were for new patients.

00:00:57:02 - 00:01:00:11

This clearly highlights a problem when some health consumers

00:01:00:11 - 00:01:03:16

can't even get a foot in the door, and signals

00:01:03:16 - 00:01:06:17

the need for new approaches to be taken.

00:01:07:05 - 00:01:09:03

There's a lot to be optimistic about.

00:01:09:03 - 00:01:12:06

there's a huge willingness and excitement.

00:01:12:06 - 00:01:13:17

And we've heard it here in the room today,

00:01:13:17 - 00:01:16:02

but actually we've heard it all throughout this process.

00:01:16:02 - 00:01:18:08

And that's really what we need to harness.

00:01:18:08 - 00:01:21:17

Through genuine partnership and shared decision making,

00:01:22:01 - 00:01:23:06

the patient will be more

00:01:23:06 - 00:01:25:03

committed to the chosen treatment,

00:01:25:03 - 00:01:27:19

will be more motivated to show up,

00:01:27:19 - 00:01:31:08

more likely to take agency over their own health and wellbeing.

00:01:31:09 - 00:01:34:11

This is a win win situation.
