Cheryl Steele jpegWestern Health’s Cheryl Steele has received a Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award.

Recognition for diabetes champion

Western Health’s diabetes education services manager Cheryl Steele has been recognised by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

The diabetes educator is the inaugural winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award and was chosen by an eight-member independent review panel.

With first-hand experience of living with diabetes, Mrs Steele is committed to helping people in the western suburbs living with the condition.

‘My primary interests are type 1 diabetes prevention and cure and diabetes self management, education and gestational diabetes,’ Mrs Steele said.

‘On a personal level, I have lived with type 1 diabetes for 28 years and I am the mother of three children, two of whom developed type 1 diabetes as children.

‘I have four grandchildren, one of whom developed type 1 diabetes at the age of five.’

Mrs Steele is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Australian Diabetes Educators Association, a steering committee member of the National Association of Diabetes Centres and a member of the Medical, Education and Scientific Advisory Board at Diabetes Australia.

‘Cheryl has been an outstanding leader in diabetes education and research for more than 25 years,’ said Western Health Chief Executive Alex Cockram.

‘She established pump services at Western Health, has mentored many diabetes educators and has also been active in expanding services for women with gestational diabetes at Sunshine Hospital.’

Mrs Steele was presented with her trophy and a cheque for $3000 and plans to use the money in helping to establish Western Health’s type 1 diabetes clinic to be based at Sunshine Hospital and improving services throughout Western Health including the pump and gestational diabetes clinic.
