Website specialises in cancer care exercises

Eastern Health and La Trobe University physiotherapist and researcher Amy Dennett has developed a practical and engaging online resource for cancer-specific exercise therapy services.

The Cancer Exercise Toolkit website helps clinicians working in cancer care to deliver evidence-based exercise interventions.

With support from the Australian Physiotherapy Association Pat Cosh Trust, Dr Dennett’s team created the evidence-based, online resource.

And the Toolkit gives exercise professionals the knowledge and skills to set up and deliver exercise therapy in their clinics or health services.

The website was co-designed with exercise professionals across Australia during four online workshops.

Key learning needs were identified and clinicians worked with the research team to develop content and provide feedback on the pilot website.

The Cancer Exercise Toolkit website is now a ‘one stop shop’ for exercise professionals but has broad applicability for anybody treating people with cancer.

It contains key information including practical tips on setting up a program, comprising assessment forms and templates, clinical guidance relating to safety and exercise prescription, consumer handouts and videos and clinician education resources – including podcasts, videos and helpful links.

Importantly, the website also offers an interactive map of current cancer-specific exercise services across the public and private sectors to increase ease of access for referrers and consumers.
