Path lab to serve northern suburbs patients

Northern Heath has opened its own pathology service – the state’s first public in-house laboratory service in 40 years.

Northern Pathology Victoria’s main laboratory will be located at Northern Hospital Epping with a range of pathology and collection services at Broadmeadows Hospital, Bundoora Centre and Craigieburn Centre.

Northern Health Chief Executive Siva Sivarajah, said planning started two years ago.

‘Congratulations to our team, led by director of haematology Prahlad Ho and all departments involved in the successful transition towards our own pathology service.’

The service will provide haematology, transfusion medicine, microbiology and biochemistry testing for all inpatients, outpatients and private patients.

Northern Pathology Victoria will have a specific emphasis on patient safety, clinical efficacy and quality reporting.

As part of this commitment, it has purchased cutting edge technology, including a fully automated track system, beginning in September, 2019, molecular testing service in microbiology and a complex special coagulation service with a full suite of testing.
