Australia Day award for population health advisor

Department of Health and Human Services’ population health and wellbeing advisor Haileluel Gebre-Selassie has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (general division) in the Australia Day 2019 honours list.

Mr Gebre-Selassie received the award for service to the African community of Victoria.

DHHS Secretary Kym Peake congratulated Mr Gebre-Selassie.

Over the past 25 years, he has been providing extensive voluntary services for Victorian communities and has played key leadership roles in many organisations.

He is well-connected within multicultural sectors and has been instrumental in the implementation of several initiatives, including the African Leadership Development Program.

The program provides an outstanding opportunity for aspiring African Australian leaders to develop their leadership and networking skills so they can confidently contribute to their local community.

More than 250 African community leaders from over 40 communities have graduated from the program since it was established in 2010.
