A new 16-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner at Maryborough District Health Service has transformed the way in which local residents access diagnostic services.
Before the CT scanner – funded by the State Government – was installed, patients requiring this level of diagnostic treatment travelled to Ballarat or Bendigo.
‘Having to travel fairly long distances to access treatment is an additional burden that patients really don’t want to have to contend with,’ said MDHS Chief Executive Glenis Beaumont.
‘The State Government understood MDHS philosophy to provide a comprehensive health service easily accessible to all our community and provided a $600,000 grant to buy the scanner,’ Ms Beaumont said.
Radiographer David Singe said a CT scanner had advantages over traditional x-rays.
‘MDHS has expanded its diagnostic capabilities, providing high resolution images that will greatly enhance patient outcomes,’ Mr Singe said.
Ms Beaumont said with the expansion of MDHS’ imaging service, additional staff had been appointed including a nurse, radiographer and receptionist.
