- SRS proprietors must ensure that they have appropriately trained staff, relevant to the SRS' resident's needs.
- Personal support coordinators (PSC) must complete a minimum of 40 hours training every three years in priority training areas.
- The department funds Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) Victoria to provide free, specialised training courses and workshops for Supported Residential Service (SRS) staff and proprietors.
The Department of Health and Human Services funds Leading Age Services Australia (LASA) Victoria to offer free, specialised training courses and workshops for SRS staff and proprietors. The training is designed to provide skills and knowledge to assist and improve the safety and quality of services provided to residents.

Approved priority training areas
The selection of priority training areas is based on departmental analysis of compliance data, complaints, incident records; and issues identified through the Community Visitors program. In any three-year period, additional priority training areas may be added in response to identified training needs in the sector.
The priority training areas for 2013-2016 are:
- identifying and reporting sexual assault
- management and response to aggressive behaviours
- identifying and responding to family violence
- working with people with complex behavioural issues such as people with complex mental health or anti-social behaviours
- coordinating health and support services for residents
- communications and complaints handling
- emergency management planning and response
- public health and hygiene.
First aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation
If a PSC has completed first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training in the past three years, they may include these hours of training as part of their 40 hour training requirement.
40 hour training requirement for personal support coordinators
Under regulation 36(3) of the Supported Residential Services (Private Proprietors) Regulations 2012, proprietors must ensure that a personal support coordinator (PSC) undertakes a minimum of 40 hours training every three years in priority areas approved by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.
A PSC must hold a relevant qualification (for example, certificate III in Aged Care) and demonstrate proof of training. It is the responsibility of the proprietor to make sure their PSC completes appropriate training every three years.
The 40 hours may be completed at any time over a three-year period. There is no requirement to complete a set number of hours each year.
Commencement of three year cycle
Commencement of priority training requirements starts when a staff member undertakes the role of a PSC. For example, if a person commences the role of a PSC in July 2013, they must complete the 40 hour training requirement by July 2016.
