Statewide projects

Key messages

  • Since 2013, 19 Victorian health services have implemented one or more of the redesign programs developed by the UK’s globally renowned Productive Series.
  • The Productive Series was developed by the UK National Health Service (NHS) and aligns closely with the objectives of the Redesigning Hospital Care Program (RHCP).
  • The series aims to achieve measurable improvements in patient care time, length of stay and theatre utilisation, as well as key quality measures within health services.

Statewide projects draw together health services from across the state to undertake redesign projects and learn and share together to deliver outcomes in quality safety and efficiency.

Priority areas are identified by the department in consultation with health services have included:

  • Productive Ward
  • Productive Theatre
  • Productive Leader
  • Efficiency Through Redesign - linen, stock and inventory, pharmacy supply chain
  • flow and access to improve NEST and NEAT indicators.

National Health Service Productive Series

The National Health Service Productive Series program provides a range of quality improvement products (toolkits) that guide health services through an improvement program in which local solutions are led by their clinical staff.

Alignment with RHCP

The Productive Series closely aligns with the program objectives of the Redesigning Hospital Care Program (RHCP) and builds upon the program’s achievements to date.

Following a successful pilot initiative, 19 Victorian health services had the opportunity to implement one or more of the Productive Series programs. Each was iteratively rolled out from April 2013, with implementation completed in December 2014.

Aims of the Productive Series

The Productive Series aims to achieve measurable improvements in direct care time, length of stay and theatre utilisation, and in key quality measures within health services. It is underpinned by the ‘lean methodology’ pioneered by the carmaker Toyota to eliminate waste, improve workflows, and simplify processes. A key principle of this methodology is to identify the customer, understand their needs, and work with them to design new processes.

Background

The Productive Series was developed by the UK National Health Service in 2008 to support frontline clinical teams in participating in and informing process improvement.
