Department of Health

Life expectancy is an estimate of the average length of time that a person can expect to live, assuming that the current mortality rates for each age group will remain constant for the lifetime of that person. However, mortality rates can be expected to change during a person's lifetime.

Life tables

Life expectancy estimates are derived from life tables. Life tables may be complete - based on a single year of age and including deaths at all ages, or abridged - based on aggregated age bands. Complete life tables tend to be used for national populations and abridged tables for sub-populations. The abridged life tables have been used to derive all estimates for Victoria.
