More Victorians will be closer to getting the care they need sooner and closer to their families, carers and supporters, with the advertised call for submissions now open for new Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals (Local Services).

New Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals in Dandenong, Shepparton, Melton, Mildura, Lilydale, Bendigo-Echuca and Orbost-Bairnsdale will open by the end of 2023 – adding to the first six services that opened late last year.

Based locally, this service provides treatment care and support to people aged 26 years and over who are experiencing mental health concerns, including those with co-occurring substance use or addiction concerns – in their community and closer to their support networks.

Free and easy to access, with no need for a referral, the Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals will act as a ‘front door’ to the reformed mental health and wellbeing system.

The rolling establishment program will see between 50 to 60 Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals implemented across Victoria by 2026.

The first six Mental Health and Wellbeing Locals are now open in the local government areas of Benalla-Wangaratta-Mansfield, Brimbank, Frankston, Greater Geelong-Queenscliffe, Latrobe and Whittlesea. This new service stream is central to developing a responsive and integrated mental health and wellbeing system with community at its heart.
