Coronavirus update for Victoria - 21 August 2020

Victoria has recorded 179 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 17,852.

Victoria has recorded 179 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 17,852.

The overall total has increased by 169 due to 10 cases being reclassified largely due to duplication.

Within Victoria, 42 of the new cases are linked to outbreaks or complex cases and 137 are under investigation.

There have been nine new deaths from COVID-19 reported since yesterday: One man in his 60s, one woman in her 70s, two women in their 80s, two men in their 80s, one women in her 90s, one man in his 90s and one man in his 100s.

Seven of the nine new deaths are linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities. To date, 385 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

In Victoria at the current time:

  • 3808 cases may indicate community transmission
  • 4421 cases are currently active in Victoria
  • 626 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including 40 in intensive care
  • 12,940 people have recovered from the virus
  • A total of 2,049,235 test results have been received which is an increase of 20,326 since yesterday.

Of the total cases:

  • 16,426 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 1081 are from regional Victoria
  • Total cases include 8563 men and 9260 women
  • Total number of healthcare workers: 2607 active cases: 668
  • There are 1732 active cases relating to aged care facilities

Active aged care outbreaks with the highest cumulative case numbers are as follows:

  • 209 cases have been linked to Epping Gardens Aged Care in Epping
  • 194 cases have been linked to St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner
  • 158 cases have been linked to Estia Aged Care Facility in Ardeer
  • 152 cases have been linked to BaptCare Wyndham Lodge Community in Werribee
  • 132 cases have been linked to Kirkbrae Presbyterian Homes in Kilsyth
  • 113 cases have been linked to Outlook Gardens Aged Care Facility in Dandenong North
  • 113 cases have been linked to Cumberland Manor Aged Care Facility in Sunshine North
  • 112 cases have been linked to Twin Parks Aged Care in Reservoir
  • 110 cases have been linked to Estia Aged Care Facility in Heidelberg
  • 107 cases have been linked to Japara Goonawarra Aged Care Facility in Sunbury

In Victoria there are currently 62 active cases in residential disability accommodation:

  • Total Resident cases: 13; Total Staff cases: 49
  • Active cases in NDIS homes: 46 (13 residents)
  • Active cases in ‘transfer’ homes (State regulated/funded): 16 (0 residents)
  • Active cases in state government delivered and funded homes: 0

The Victorian Government last year transferred 547 disability residential homes and staff to five non-government providers which represents approximately 43 per cent of the accommodation market.

Residents in these homes are NDIS clients, and these residential services are currently funded as part of Victoria’s annual $2.5 billion contribution to the NDIS. These homes are scheduled to be transferred to the NDIS by the end of the year.

The total number of people receiving disability accommodation/respite services in Victoria is approximately 6500.

Cases currently linked to key outbreaks are as follows:

  • 156 cases have been linked to JBS in Brooklyn
  • 154 cases have been linked to Royal Melbourne Hospital Royal Park campus
  • 65 cases have been linked to the Linfox warehouse in Truganina
  • 55 cases have been linked to Golden Farms Poultry
  • 37 cases have been linked to Hazeldene’s Chicken Farm in Bendigo
  • 32 cases have been linked to Diamond Valley Pork
  • 28 cases have been linked to Coles distribution centre in Laverton

The Department is also investigating cases linked to The Melbourne Clinic in Richmond, St John of God Rehabilitation Centre in Frankston, the Royal Women’s Hospital Outpatients Pregnancy Clinic and Plenty Residential Services in Bundoora.

As public health work is undertaken throughout the day, outbreak totals are likely to change as the public health team identify links between cases and identified outbreaks. Organisation based outbreak totals include contacts as well as employees/residents/staff/students of that location/business.
