Coronavirus update for Victoria - 18 July 2020

Victoria has recorded 217 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 5353.

The overall total has increased by 188, after 32 cases were reclassified – largely due to duplication.

Within Victoria, 11 of the new cases are linked to outbreaks or complex cases and 205 are under investigation. There was one case in a returned traveller in hotel quarantine.

Three new deaths have been reported since yesterday: a woman in her 90s, a woman in her 80s, and a man in his 80s. All died in hospital. To date, 35 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

In Victoria at the current time:

• 1020 cases may indicate community transmission
• 2608 cases are currently active in Victoria
• 110 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including 25 in intensive care
• 2709 people have recovered from the virus
• Of the total cases, 4909 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 324 are from regional Victoria
• Total cases include 2795 men and 2529 women
• More than 1,278,000 tests have been processed
• Total number of healthcare workers: 405, active cases: 157 (of which the vast majority were acquired in the community)

Cases currently linked to public housing in North Melbourne, Flemington and Carlton are as follows:

• 286 cases are residents of various public housing towers in North Melbourne and Flemington. Investigations are continuing into how these cases are linked.
• 48 cases are residents of various public housing towers in Carlton. Investigations are continuing into if and/or how these cases are linked.

At least 100 of the Alfred St residents will be required to continue a period of isolation or quarantine, following completion of the site’s lockdown tonight, due to either being an active case or a current close contact of a known case. The conclusion of quarantine will vary for individuals and we will continue to advise residents what this means for them.

Cases currently linked to key outbreaks are as follows:

• 164 cases have been linked to Al-Taqwa College
• 33 cases have been linked to JBS abattoir in Brooklyn
• 23 cases have been linked to Glendale Aged Care facility in Werribee
• 21 cases have been linked to the Northern Hospital
• 4 cases have been linked to the Woolworths Distribution Centre in Mulgrave
• 3 cases have been linked to Warringal Hospital Heidelberg
• 9 cases have been linked to St Basil’s Home for the Aged in Fawkner
• 5 cases have been linked to Clever Kids Childcare in Ashburton
• 13 cases have been linked to Estia Health Aged Care in Heidelberg
• 5 cases have been linked across two Serco sites in Box Hill (2) and Mill Park (3)
• Three new nursing homes have reported cases, with single cases now linked to Bethlehem Aged Care Facility in Bendigo, Bill Crawford Lodge in Ballarat and BUPA Edithvale.

As interviews are undertaken throughout the day, these outbreak totals are likely to change as the public health team identify links between cases and identified outbreaks.

Stage 3 “Stay at Home” restrictions are in force across metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire.

“These restrictions have become necessary because of the sharp increase in cases,” said Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton.

“If you live in these areas, there are only four reasons to leave your home: shopping for food and essential items; care and caregiving; daily exercise; and work and study - if you can’t do it from home.

“These are tough measures, but this virus is not selective - it will impact anyone it encounters, and personal contact is the clear source of its transmission. We need everyone to do their part and ensure it is stopped in its tracks.”
