Coronavirus update for Victoria - 18 August 2020

Victoria has recorded 222 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 17,238.

Victoria has recorded 222 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 17,238.

The overall total has increased by 211 due to 11 cases being reclassified largely due to duplication.

Within Victoria, 54 of the new cases are linked to outbreaks or complex cases and 168 are under investigation.

There have been 17 new deaths from COVID-19 reported since yesterday: One man in his 60s, one woman in her 70s, one man in his 70s, two women in their 80s, four men in their 80s, four women in their 90s and four men in their 90s

13 of the 17 new deaths are linked to known outbreaks in aged care facilities. To date, 351 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

In Victoria at the current time:

  • 3669 cases may indicate community transmission
  • 7274 cases are currently active in Victoria
  • 665 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, including 45 in intensive care
  • 9413 people have recovered from the virus
  • A total of 1,992,725 test results have been received which is an increase of 17,695 since yesterday.

Of the total cases:

  • 15,848 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 1033 are from regional Victoria
  • Total cases include 8263 men and 8932 women
  • Total number of healthcare workers: 2414 active cases: 1036
  • There are 2024 active cases relating to aged care facilities

Active aged care outbreaks with the highest cumulative case numbers are as follows:

  • 205 cases have been linked to Epping Gardens Aged Care in Epping
  • 190 cases have been linked to St Basil’s Homes for the Aged in Fawkner
  • 157 cases have been linked to Estia Aged Care Facility in Ardeer
  • 136 cases have been linked to BaptCare Wyndham Lodge Community in Werribee
  • 131 cases have been linked to Kirkbrae Presbyterian Homes in Kilsyth
  • 111 cases have been linked to Outlook Gardens Aged Care Facility in Dandenong North
  • 110 cases have been linked to Estia Aged Care Facility in Heidelberg
  • 101 cases have been linked to Twin Parks Aged Care in Reservoir
  • 100 cases have been linked to Japara Goonawarra in Sunbury
  • 99 cases have been linked to Cumberland Manor Aged Care Facility in Sunshine

In Victoria there are currently 90 active cases in residential disability accommodation:

  1. Total Resident cases: 22; Total Staff cases: 68
  2. Active cases in NDIS homes: 61 (19 residents)
  3. Active cases in ‘transfer’ homes (State regulated/funded*): 28 (3 residents)
  4. Active cases in state government delivered and funded homes: 1

The Victorian Government last year transferred 547 disability residential homes and staff to five non-government providers which represents approximately 43 per cent of the accommodation market.

Residents in these homes are NDIS clients, and these residential services are currently funded as part of Victoria’s annual $2.5 billion contribution to the NDIS. These homes are scheduled to be transferred to the NDIS by the end of the year.

The total number of people receiving disability accommodation/respite services in Victoria is approximately 6500.

Cases currently linked to key outbreaks are as follows:

  • 210 cases have been linked to Al-Taqwa College
  • 207 cases have been linked to Bertocchi Smallgoods in Thomastown
  • 149 cases have been linked to JBS in Brooklyn
  • 64 cases have been linked to Woolworths Distribution Centre in Mulgrave
  • 63 cases have been linked to the Linfox warehouse in Truganina
  • 44 cases have been linked to Catholic Regional College in Sydenham
  • 35 cases have been linked to Hazeldene’s Chicken Farm in Bendigo
  • 33 cases have been linked to Ausfresh in Broadmeadows

The Department is also investigating cases linked to the Austin Hospital, Knox Private Hospital and the West End apartment construction site in West Melbourne.

As public health work is undertaken throughout the day, outbreak totals are likely to change as the public health team identify links between cases and identified outbreaks. Organisation based outbreak totals include contacts as well as employees/residents/staff/students of that location/business.
