Victoria has recorded two new cases of coronavirus since yesterday, with the total number of cases now at 20,317.
There have been no new deaths from COVID-19 reported since yesterday. To date, 816 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.
One of today’s new cases is a household contact of an existing case.
The other case, which remains under investigation, relates to a patient at the Royal Children’s Hospital. All close contacts are being tested and isolated. DHHS respects the privacy of patients and cannot provide details about individual cases unless it is necessary to do so in the interest of public health.
Of today’s two new cases, there are single cases in Greater Dandenong and Knox.
The average number of cases diagnosed in the last 14 days (2 Oct 2020 – 15 Oct 2020) for metropolitan Melbourne is 8.7 and regional Victoria is 0.6. The rolling daily average case number is calculated by averaging out the number of new cases over the past 14 days.
The total number of cases from an unknown source in the last 14 days (30 Sep 2020 – 13 Oct 2020) is 17 for metropolitan Melbourne and zero from regional Victoria. The 14-day period for the source of acquisition data ends 48 hours earlier than the 14-day period used to calculate the new case average due to the time required to fully investigate a case and assign its mode of acquisition.
The 17 mystery cases in the last 14 days (30 Sep 2020 – 13 Oct 2020) are located in the following postcodes, 3015, 3019, 3024, 3025 (two cases), 3027, 3037, 3046, 3047, 3073 (two cases), 3130, 3147, 3173, 3175, 3184 and 3977.
Victoria has increased its surveillance of wastewater for viral fragments of coronavirus, with samples now being taken from more than 42 metropolitan and regional sites. Testing of wastewater can show if coronavirus is present in a local community.
A wastewater test result in Kilmore on 13 October is a presumptive positive and requires further confirmation. A positive test result would be expected given clinical testing results in the area.
In Victoria at the current time:
- 4280 cases may indicate community transmission – an increase of two since yesterday
- 157 cases are currently active in Victoria
- 14 cases of coronavirus are in hospital, there are no cases in intensive care
- 19,279 people have recovered from the virus
- A total of 2,906,876 test results have been received which is an increase of 16,381 since yesterday.
Of the 157 current active cases in Victoria:
- 150 are in metropolitan Melbourne under the Second Step of our roadmap
- Seven are in regional local government areas under the Third Step of our roadmap. There are four active cases are in Mitchell Shire and three in Greater Shepparton.
Of the total cases:
- 18,919 cases are from metropolitan Melbourne, while 1200 are from regional Victoria
- Total cases include 9690 men and 10,614 women
- Total number of healthcare workers: 3598, active cases: 10
- There are 14 active cases relating to aged care facilities
Active aged care outbreaks with the highest active case numbers are as follows:

- 3 active cases are currently linked to Estia Aged Care Facility Keilor (total cases: 52)

Following investigation, it is believed the index case for the Box Hill Hospital outbreak was a patient cared for on the COVID ward. Investigations continue into avenues of transmission from that ward to other areas of the hospital.
As public health work is undertaken throughout the day, outbreak totals are likely to change as the public health team identify links between cases and identified outbreaks. Organisation based outbreak totals include contacts as well as employees/residents/staff/students of that location/business.
