Key message

In 2004, Australian Health Ministers stated a commitment to the implementation of the National Inpatient Medication Chart (NIMC) in public hospitals. Standardising the charts means that clinicians moving between health services will have consistent documentation for prescribing, administering and supplying medicines. The NIMC was designed using best evidence based practice, to reduce patient harm from medication errors.  

National Standard

The National Safety and Quality Health Service Standard 4.6.2 requires that the medication history and current clinical information are available at the point of care.Compliance with this standard can be demonstrated by using one of the nationally endorsed inpatient charts, together with the National Medication Management Plan.
