The health information workforce encompasses several related occupations that work in all areas of health. These include (but are not limited to) the following occupations:
- health information managers,
- clinical coders,
- health data analysts,
- clinical costing specialists,
- health information technology specialists,
- health data scientists,
- bio-informaticians, and
- health informaticians.
Clinical coding workforce
A clinical coder works in health information management classifying health data into standard codes to allow for easy storage, retrieval and analysis.
Health information management workforce
A health information manager plans, develops, implements and manages health information services to meet the requirements of healthcare delivery.
Working in health finance and clinical costing
There are four broad areas of financial skills required - reporting and business intelligence, activity-based management and costing, finance, and engagement.
