In late 2008, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) signed the National partnership agreement on hospital and health workforce reform (PDF, 304kB). This agreement was accompanied by a $1.5 billion funding package, and identifies workforce development as a key enabler of a sustainable healthcare system for Australia.
