Medical specialist training

Both the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments offer funding to expand and support medical specialist training.

Strengthening Medical Specialist Training

The Strengthening Medical Specialist Training (SMST) program provides support for health services to increase the number of accredited specialist training positions in areas of identified workforce shortage.

Applications are coordinated by health services. For further information regarding the key program contact within your health service please contact us at workforce@health.vic.gov.au.

Applications for the 2013 calendar year are now open and will close on 30 September 2012.

Basic Physician Training Consortia

The Basic Physician Training (BPT) Consortia were established in 2006. The training consortia model links inner metro hospitals with outer metro and rural hospitals in order to coordinate the training, recruitment and rotation of basic physician trainees across member health services.

Specialist Training Program

The Commonwealth Specialist Training Program (STP) provides support to enable medical specialist trainees to rotate through an expanded range of settings beyond traditional public teaching hospitals.
