Health Careers for a Healthy Future

If you’re considering work in a Victorian hospital, here’s some information that should make the decision a little easier.

Job opportunities exist for health professionals and recent graduates from other states and territories in Australia as well as overseas.

Job opportunities also exist for Melbourne-based health professionals looking to work in or relocate to regional Victoria. Most regional centres are less than two hours drive from Melbourne.

Information is available from the Medical Practitioners Board of Victoria (external site) about the registration requirements for medical practitioners in Victoria.

Information for international medical graduates is also available on this site.

Applying for an internship or HMO2 position

The Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) is funded by the Department of Human Services to match medical graduates with intern and HMO2 positions in Victorian public hospitals.

All graduates of Victorian medical schools applying for intern jobs in Victorian public hospitals are guaranteed a position. Some intern positions are also available for graduates from other states and territories as well as overseas.

Details of how to apply for an intern or HMO2 position in Victoria, and eligibility criteria for the positions, can be found on the PMCV computer matching website.

Applying for Basic Physician Training

The Postgraduate Medical Council of Victoria (PMCV) is funded by the Department of Human Services to match basic physician trainees (BPTs) with BPT2 and BPT3 positions in Victorian public hospitals.

For details of the eligibility criteria, applications process and guidelines go to the PMCV computer matching website.

Applying for other specialty training

In Australia, specialist vocational medical training is organised, supervised and examined by the relevant medical college and usually occurs within defined training positions, programs, departments or institutions approved by the relevant college. General practice vocational training is organised through General Practice Education and Training (GPET), in line with the standards set by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

For further information on the availability of specialty training in Victorian hospitals, contact the relevant medical college.

Applying for jobs in Victorian public hospitals

In Victoria, each health service is responsible for its own recruitment. Health services will advertise their current vacancies on their website. They may also advertise in newspapers, the Medical Journal of Australia (MJA) and job search websites. Health services may also use careers expositions and conferences to promote career opportunities, as well as approaching potential recruits through the respective medical college. Some health services will use recruitment agencies.

The Department of Human Services maintains the Victorian Public Sector Health Employment Website, which incorporates employment opportunities in a range of disciplines in State Government funded health services.

If you are interested in a particular health service or region, it may be worth contacting the relevant health service to discuss career opportunities. Contact details will appear on the health service’s website.
