Counting of Accountable Items Used During Surgery

The VSCC continues to receive reports of cases of retained objects after surgery and it transpires that these particular devices have not been included in the surgical count. It would appear that the Australian College of Operating Room Nurses (ACORN) standards are not always carried out. The VSCC recently contacted all Directors of Surgical Services in Victoria about this matter and recommended that their theatres implement and adhere to the current ACORN Standard regarding surgical counts in the operating suite. A copy of this standard was enclosed with this letter. The VSCC would appreciate your support on this matter by checking with your operating theatre supervisor that your theatres use these standards as a matter of policy.
