Victorian Consultative Council on Anaesthetic Mortality and Morbidity

The Victorian Consultative Council on Anaesthetic Mortality and Morbidity (VCCAMM) was established in 1976 under Section 13 of the Health Act 1958. The VCCAMM now operates pursuant to Section 24 of the Health Act 1958 (as amended).

The function of VCCAMM is to identify avoidable causes of morbidity or mortality related to anaesthesia and to disseminate as widely as possible, the results of deliberations in order to improve the safety and quality of anaesthesia practice.

Key elements supporting VCCAMM are:

  • Voluntary reporting by Anaesthetists (including other Medical Practitioners) and hospital anaesthetic departments as well as data sourced from the State Coroner’s Office.
  • Preservation of confidentiality.
  • A detailed classification system that also identifies causal and/or contributory factors. Download the classification system below.
  • Direct feedback to the reporting Anaesthetist (or other Medical Practitioner).
  • Recognition of the importance of information gained from reports of anaesthetic-related morbidity.
