Trauma education and training

Trauma Coordination Group

The Trauma Coordination Group (TCG) subcommittee of the State Trauma Committee (STC) provides advice about issues including trauma education and training to best support the Victorian State Trauma System (VSTS).

The TCG provides advice on:

  • policy development, system performance and quality management regarding the VSTS
  • system performance monitoring initiatives, including thematic analysis of the VSTS using the Victorian State Trauma Registry to review system performance and inform system improvements
  • identify opportunities for education in the state-wide system organisation and management of trauma response
  • specific matters referred to the TCG by the STC for review and recommendations.

Membership of the sub-committee is multidisciplinary and includes representatives from major trauma services (MTS), metropolitan trauma services, rural trauma services, regional trauma coordinators, the Transport Accident Commission, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Ambulance Victoria.   The Chair is the Director of Trauma Services, Major Trauma Service.

Background

The Review of emergency and trauma services – Victoria 1999 report (RoTES) led to the establishment of the VSTS and included 17 recommendations about education and training to support a statewide integrated trauma system. The STC convened a subcommittee to advise on implementing the RoTES recommendations and provide advice to the back to the STC on trauma education issues.

In 2009, the department, in conjunction with the STC, developed a new strategic framework; Trauma towards 2014 Review and future directions of the Victorian State Trauma System (Trauma Towards 2014). Trauma Towards 2014 reviewed the establishment of the VSTS, noted the improvements in patient management and outcomes, and considered how the VSTS can continue to be enhanced into the future.

Trauma Towards 2014 further sets out the future direction of the VSTS which includes:

  • strengthening the role of the MTS in supporting trauma education and training
  • continuing to monitor and support the role of Adult Retrieval Victoria in coordination advise and transfer of major trauma
  • reinforcing the trauma triage and transfer guidelines across the state.

Regional education and training

Regional trauma coordinators (RTCs) are key contacts in supporting the development and delivery of regional and statewide trauma training and education. RTCs are also active in promoting information and knowledge about the Victorian State Trauma System.
