Supported Residential Services

Supported Residential Services - SRSs - provide accommodation and care for people who need support in everyday life, for example, people who are frail or have a disability.

SRSs are usually private businesses. They do not receive government funding but must be registered with the State Government and are monitored to ensure they provide certain standards of care and accommodation.

SRSs vary in the services they provide, the people they accommodate and the fees they charge.

There are currently 170 SRSs registered with the Department of Health (as at 1 January 2012) ranging from small concerns accommodating as few as five people, to larger facilities with up to 90 residents.

Responsibility for administration of the Health Services Act 1988 (the legislation governing SRS) transferred from the Department of Human Services to the newly created Department of Health (DoH) as from 12 August 2009.

This site provides useful information and links for people, their families, carers, service providers and the wider community. It also provides guidelines and forms for people who own and operate SRSs, those considering operating an SRS and those considering building or using existing premises as an SRS.

The latest SRS Census conducted of the SRS sector was in 2008 and it provides a snapshot of the resident and facility profile of the sector.

For more information see About SRSs.
