A companion to the Rural procedural services planning framework, this document outlines: processes for defining the scope of clinical practice of the rural general practitioner (GP) surgeon; relevant requirements to be considered by rural health services when appointing a GP surgeon as a visiting medical officer, and details of training programs, pathways and courses for rural GP surgical training.
18th Ministerial Rural Health Forum: Health Services in Small Rural Communities

Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme (VPTAS)
The Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme (VPTAS) subsidises the travel and accommodation costs incurred by rural Victorians and an approved escort who have no option but to travel a long distance to receive approved medical specialist services. Some administrative changes have been made to the scheme and new claim forms developed to make claiming for VPTAS easier.

Rural and Remote Advanced Primary Health Care Certificate
The purpose of the Rural and Remote Advanced Primary Care Certificate (RRAPCC) is to develop the skills and knowledge of health professionals working in rural and remote areas of Victoria to respond to the health needs of clients using evidence based approaches to health services. The RRAPCC will give registered nurses (Division 1) the knowledge and skills to manage more autonomously the wide range of patients who present to rural hospitals and bush nursing centers.
Rural Health bank pilot project, Grampians Region
This pilot project is a DHS initiative and is being managed by Stawell Regional Health. The Rural Health Bank is a centralised casual bank service which is designed to coordinate the placement and professional development of nurses and allied health staff who provide relief services in the Grampians Region of Victoria.
Rural Emergency Enhancement Workshops
The Rural Health Branch in collaboration with Regional Offices, facilitated interactive workshops in every Region to engage the rural health sector in developing strategies for enhancing emergency care across rural Victoria. To inform discussion, the Rural emergency enhancement workshops-Background paper was released.
2009 Rural health service board appointments
A general appointment round will be advertised in mid-January 2009 for appointment to the boards of regional public health services, rural public hospitals and multi purpose services, with appointments commencing 1 July 2009. Further information and application forms are available now.
Governance training for health service board members
The department provides workshops for metropolitan, rural and community health service board members to develop their governance capability. 2009 workshop dates are now available.
