2008 Governance training for new and continuing health board members
The department provides workshops for metropolitan, rural and community health board members to further develop their governance capability.

ICT workshop for rural health services – Thursday 14 August
Rural health service board members, CEOs and managers are invited to a workshop on information and communications technology (ICT) in rural health. The workshop will be held at the Telstra Dome in Melbourne from 9.30am – 2.30pm and will include:

  • an insight into the national and Victorian ehealth agenda
  • an opportunity to contribute to the next health ICT strategy
  • HealthSMART – hear about others’ experiences and have your questions answered.

16th Ministerial rural and regional health forum: Victoria’s Cancer Action Plan 2008-2011
The 16th Rural and Regional Ministerial Health Forum was held in Gippsland on 11 July on Victoria's Cancer Action Plan 2008-2011. The key points from Fran Thorn's presentation and workshop notes are attached.

Rural public health care agencies alliances policy
The rural public health care agencies alliances policy outlines government requirements for the operation of rural health information and communication technology (ICT) alliances. See Hospital Circular 17/2008.

Proposal to change the law to enable nurses to supply medicines
The Department of Human Services is considering the possibility and impact of changing the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act (1981) and Health Professions Registration Act (2005) to authorise appropriately trained registered nurses (Division 1) working in rural Victoria to supply medicines for specific conditions, under certain circumstances and according to evidence-based protocols

Rural collaborative practice model
The rural collaborative practice model pilot aims to introduce a new collaborative practice model of care into a selection of rural hospitals and a bush nursing centre. The pilot aims to deliver sustainable and safe emergency care in rural Victoria. The Department of Human Services and the Victorian Health Services Management Innovation Council jointly fund the Pilot.

2008 rural board appointment process
The 2008 board appointment round for rural public healthcare agencies has now reached its final stages. Board appointments shall commence from either 1 July 2008 or 1 November 2008.

Rural health conference 2008
The 3rd rural health conference, hosted by the Department of Human Services, was held from 30 April to 2 May in Bendigo. The conference focused on chronic disease including current issues and strategies for rural health services. Presentations from the conference are now available to download.
