Public Health Research Projects

The Public Health Branch coordinates an annual funding round for research into key public health issues. Project briefs are advertised each year according to the operational needs of the Branch and consideration of advice from the Public Health Research Expert Advisory Panel.

The closing date for the 2007-08 funding round was 18 January 2008.  Applications are currently being assessed.

Funding & Timeframe

Applications must address one of the project briefs. A contact person is listed on each project brief and applicants are strongly advised to discuss their application with this person prior to submission.

Information sessions were held in the week beginning 3 December. Notes from these sessions are now available.

As a guide to the complexity and scale of the research, project budgets should be in the range of $20,000 to a maximum of $100,000 (exclusive of GST) for a 6 to 12 month project, except where stipulated otherwise.

A limited number of longer-term projects with related budgets may be considered.

Decisions about the number of projects to be funded and the level of funding to be allocated within each annual funding round will be based on the assessed quality of applications and in accordance with available budget.

All applications are reviewed by an expert panel including senior staff and independent peer reviewers. Selection will be based on the assessment criteria described in the Guidelines for Applicants.

All funding is offered in accordance with terms and conditions described in the DHS Research Project Agreement. In submitting an application, applicants will be deemed to be indicating their willingness to sign this Agreement.

Final selection of projects rests with the Branch through the Research Working Group and the Director, Public Health.
