About us
The vision of the Department of Human Services Public Health Branch is to promote better health and wellbeing for all Victorians.
To this end, the Public Health Branch plays a significant role in supporting public health research in Victoria. The Branch recognises that research is fundamental to evidence-based decision-making, leading to the development of excellence in public health policy and practice.
The Public Health Research Program provides a coordinated approach to the commissioning of public health research across the Branch. To achieve this, the research program is guided by a Working Group with broad representation from all operational units of the Public Health Branch.
Importantly, high-level, independent advice is also provided by a Public Health Research Expert Advisory Panel. Bringing together Victorian experts across various areas of public health, this panel provides a forum for discussion concerning the setting of research priorities, new developments and emerging concerns, and strategies for improving the translation of research findings into practice in order to improve the health of Victorians.
The Public Health Research program has four broad strategies:
- Developing sustainable research capacity throughout Victoria – through Scholarships/Fellowships and opportunities for staff placement and education;
- Coordination of an annual funding round for public health research projects;
- Provision of research support for urgent public health issues, and;
- Providing partnership funding to support large-scale national/international funding submissions.
