Victorian Government Radiotherapy Services

This site contains information relating to radiotherapy services funded by the Department of Health, Victoria, Australia.

Cancer remains one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity in developed countries, and one whose incidence will continue to grow with the ageing of the population.

Radiotherapy is increasingly used as part of a multi-modal approach to the treatment of cancer. It may be used as the primary treatment mode or in addition to surgery and/or chemotherapy. It may be used for curative or palliative treatment.

Radiotherapy involves the use of ionising radiation (such as from x-rays, electron beams or gamma rays) to kill tumour cells.

In Victoria, cancer patients have access to both public and private sector radiotherapy services, although the majority of services are provided in the public sector.
