Pressure Ulcer Point Prevalence Surveys (PUPPS)Page content: Reduce the rate of hospital-acquired pressure injuries | PUPPS 1 (2003) | PUPPS 2 (2004) | PUPPS 3 (2006) | Future | Download documents In 2003, VQC conducted the first state-wide survey of the prevalence of pressure ulcers within Victoria’s acute and subacute health services. Reduce the rate of hospital-acquired pressure injuriesPUPPS 1 (2003)The VQC state-wide PUPPS Report 2003, released in 2004, reported on data collected in the first state-wide pressure ulcer point prevalence survey (PUPPS 1). A range of recommendations was developed to assist acute and sub-acute public health services with pressure ulcer prevention and management. As a result of these recommendations, the Minister for Health announced funding of $2 million for a state-wide mattress replacement program. The VQC also developed two patient information publications, translated into 10 languages, to help consumers make informed choices and be more involved in their own care.PUPPS 2 (2004)100% of health services participated in the second state-wide point prevalence survey. PUPPS 2 tracked the level of improvement in pressure ulcer prevalence, prevention and management since the release of the first report. The findings of PUPPS 2 indicate that significant improvement has occurred, but that more needs to be done. The key message derived from both PUPPS 1 and PUPPS 2, which forms the basis for the PUPPS 2, recommendations is the need for health services to develop evidence based, targeted strategies to 'implement, focus and sustain' a pressure ulcer prevention and management program. A sample action plan is included to assist health services with the formulation of their own pressure ulcer prevention and management strategies. PUPPS 3 (2006)The Quality & Safety Branch, Department of Human Services conducted PUPPS 3 in 2006 to identify the improvement in pressure ulcer management. The final report can be downloaded.FutureThe VQC developed Pressure Ulcer Basics, an education package aimed at providing basic information on pressure ulcer development, assessment, management and prevention, for all clinical staff. The VQC, in collaboration with the Aged Care Branch, Department of Human Services, is currently developing a PUBS package aimed at residential aged care staff. The Statewide Quality Branch has developed a Pressure Ulcer Clinical Data Set to support ongoing surveillance of pressure ulcer occurrence. The data collection is based on recommendations resulting from the three PUPPS. Further information on the indicators is available. Download documents
