The impact of communication of test results on appropriate patient carePage content: Overview | Download document OverviewMuch attention has focused on adverse events in our hospitals such as medication safety, falls prevention and hospital acquired infections. To ensure a broad approach to safety and quality, the Victorian Quality Council reviewed a less recognised, but critical, area of appropriateness of care: communication of test results. The focus was on the ‘Failure to Communicate Significant Abnormal Results’ as it was felt that this adversely affected appropriateness, but there was little information as to the extent of the problem. After reviewing case examples, and undertaking a limited literature review, problems experienced by hospitals in this area were identified, and lessons learned by health services in dealing with such problems were highlighted. The findings of the case examples and current evidence in the literature are included here.Download document
