Successfully implementing change

Change is a fundamental component of continuous quality improvement. Any improvement methodology involves introducing change and measuring its impact. In health care there has been recognition of the need for system change to support the delivery of safe, quality care. This focus on system change has been associated with the development of a number of tools and improvement strategies. Health services are also implementing system change in response to risk areas identified through review of adverse events. Understanding change management is important for those involved in bringing about system change. Further information about change management is available in the paper “Successfully Implementing Change”.

A proposed action of the 2005-2008 strategic plan is to develop tools to assist health services to implement and evaluate safety and quality activities. In order to introduce change successfully there is a need to understand change management. This paper has been developed to assist the “beginner” in project management or the clinician on the ward who has been given the responsibility of implementing practice change.
