Background

A recommendation from the VQC State-wide Pressure Ulcer Point Prevalence Survey (PUPPS) 2003 was that education be available for all health care workers.

In response to this recommendation the VQC developed two online education programs – Pressure Ulcer Basics (PUBS) and Pressure Ulcer Basics for residential aged care workers.

The packages were developed following consultation with clinical experts.

Pressure Ulcer Basics

Pressure Ulcer Basics is aimed at providing basic education on pressure ulcer assessment, management and prevention, for clinical staff. It is composed of three modules:

  • Understanding pressure ulcers
Outlines skin anatomy, the occurrence of pressure ulcers and the impact they have on patients, carers and the health care system,
  • Risk assessment
Describes the importance of assessing pressure ulcer risks and outlines the use of risk assessment tools.
  • Developing a prevention management plan
Describes strategies available to develop a risk management plan.

Pressure Ulcer Basics for residential aged care workers

Pressure Ulcer Basics for residential aged care workers is targeted towards healthcare workers in residential aged care services who do not have clinical qualifications but spend the majority of their working time with residents. It is composed of five modules:

  • An introduction to pressure ulcers
  • Risk factors
  • Risk identification
  • Communicating information about pressure ulcers
  • Prevention and management of pressure areas
  • Types of pressure areas
