NICS/VQC VTE Prevention ProjectPage content: Background | Current status | Case studiesBackgroundThe NICS VTE prevention program was undertaken from November 2005 to November 2007. It aimed to improve use of VTE preventative measures in hospitalised patients, the assessment of all patients at risk and to integrate effective thromboprophylaxis systems into the core business of Australian hospitals. The program involved developing and supporting a network of Australian hospital quality managers and clinician leaders committed to taking a more systematic approach to VTE prevention in their hospitals. NICS provided training and support to participating hospital teams, including evidence-based risk-assessment and audit tools and reminder systems to ensure that effective prevention strategies were embedded in every day clinical practice. The VQC provided funding support to ten health services. This funding support was to assist with the costs associated with participation in the NICS VTE Prevention program. The VQC also coordinated six workshops in metropolitan and rural Victoria. These 2008 workshops provided an overview of VTE prevention guidelines and an opportunity for participants to discuss strategies and tools utilised by sites participating in the NICS/VQC VTE Project. Current statusThe VQC is not currently engaged in any further work on VTE prevention. See the NICS VTE prevention program website for VTE resources and activity. Case studiesThe VQC developed case studies of how VTE prevention was addressed in three different Victorian hospital settings involved in the NICS project.
