Background

Victorian health practitioner registration boards comprise a mix of registered practitioner, community members and a lawyer. The purpose of the boards is to protect the public by registering health practitioners, accrediting professional courses and holding investigations into the professional conduct and fitness of registered practitioners to practise.

The Governor in Council makes appointments to boards on the recommendations of the Minister for Health. It should be noted that appointments are generally made for a term of up to 3 years, though these terms may be influenced by the introduction of the Council of Australian Government's Intergovernmental Agreement ('IGA') to implement the national registration and accreditation scheme. The scheme is to commence on 1 July 2010 and is planned to include 10 of the 12 state based Boards. The professions of Chinese medicine and Medical radiation practitioners will be included from 1 July 2012.

The IGA indicates that the current State/Territory boards and hearing panel list members will (if they agree) form a list of persons from whom the national boards can establish the state and territory based Boards and committees under the scheme.
